Language is not something you know by memorizing it; it is acquired by meeting enough speech you can understand. Stephen Krashen's Comprehensible Input hypothesis puts it this way: a learner's ability grows when they repeatedly encounter input that is slightly beyond their current level (i+1), in a context that makes the meaning clear.
We take this hypothesis as the design principle of our apps. Instead of having learners memorize rules first, we let them listen to and read real speech they can understand. Learners check for themselves what they understood and what they missed, and what they missed comes back before it is forgotten. Input then stops being a burden and becomes acquisition.
